Word Groups

Find all four connected groups before the shown mistakes run out.

How to play

  1. New puzzles contain one group at each difficulty: Level 1 Straightforward, Level 2 Tricky, Level 3 Hard and Level 4 Fiendish. Solve them in any order; harder connections may use wordplay or phrases.
  2. Select exactly four unsolved tiles that share a connection, then use Submit group. Select a tile again or use Deselect to change your choices. Shuffle tiles changes their order without spending a mistake or clearing your selection.
  3. A correct group reveals its connection and is removed from the remaining tiles. New puzzles also reveal the solved group’s difficulty level. Each group earns 250 points.
  4. One tile away means three of your four choices belong to one group. An incorrect-group message means the selection does not match one of this puzzle’s complete groups.
  5. Each new incorrect group uses one mistake. Submitting the same group again is rejected without using another mistake.
  6. Finding all groups completes the puzzle. If no mistakes remain first, all connections are revealed.

Head-to-head rules

Find all four word groups before making four mistakes before your opponent. Both players get the same puzzle and start together, with 3 minutes to finish. Completion time decides the match; fewer moves or a higher solo score do not beat an earlier correct finish. Finishes within 0.1 seconds draw. If neither player finishes before time runs out, the match is a draw.

Your moves and answers stay private. Leaving through the game controls forfeits the match; closing the page does not pause its clock.

Real-player matches update this game's own Elo rating. Daily and practice results keep their separate progress and never change Elo.
